SEO for Service Businesses Across Dorset
Where a business is based doesn’t always match the area it needs to compete in.
A trades business in Poole might regularly take jobs in Bournemouth. A company in Christchurch may work into neighbouring Hampshire. A specialist contractor in Weymouth or Shaftesbury might depend on enquiries from much further away.
As an SEO agency, we start with the commercial picture rather than a list of locations. Which services generate the right enquiries, where do those customers come from, and how far does the business realistically need to compete?

Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch Don't Exist in Isolation
For many businesses, Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch form an overlapping customer area.
That doesn't mean search results remain the same between them. A company performing well from a search made in Poole may be much less prominent when the same search is made from Bournemouth or Christchurch.
The businesses competing for visibility can change too. Comparing the ranking pages and local competitors across those searches helps us distinguish between a problem with local visibility and one with the underlying website or service page.
That distinction matters. Improving a Google Business Profile won't solve a weak service page, just as rewriting a page won't necessarily solve poor Maps visibility away from the business location.
When Customers Cross the County Boundary
Christchurch is a good example of why county boundaries can be misleading.
A business serving Christchurch might also work around New Milton and the New Forest. Its customers don't become irrelevant because they've crossed from Dorset into Hampshire.
We take the same view of the website. Its geographic signals should make sense in relation to where the business works, rather than being organised around administrative boundaries that customers may barely notice.
The website should reflect that real customer geography. That doesn't necessarily mean creating another page every time the service area reaches a new town. A separate location page needs something useful to say about serving that market beyond changing the place name.
Some Services Need a Wider Search Area
Not every business needs to be highly visible within a few miles of its address.
For frequent household services, proximity can matter a great deal. More specialised work can support a much larger search area because fewer businesses provide what the customer needs.
Commercial roofing is a good example. The number of potential projects within one town may be limited, while the value and nature of the work makes travelling further practical. Large-scale landscaping, regional removals and some pest control services can present a similar challenge.
Our agency takes that into account when assessing the realistic search area. For a specialist business around Weymouth or Shaftesbury, organic service visibility across a wider region may matter more than trying to establish a separate local presence in every town served.
Google Business Profile for Dorset Businesses
A Google Business Profile tells Google important things about a business, including its category, services and location.
For eligible service-area businesses, it can also specify the areas served. Those settings are useful business information, but adding a place doesn't create visibility there.
We are tasked as an agency to review the profile against the actual search results. Categories may need attention. Services may be incomplete. The profile and website may describe the business differently. In other cases, the profile is well configured and the constraint lies elsewhere.
The point is to find out before changing it.
Check Rankings Across Dorset
A Google search made from your own computer doesn’t show you a neutral set of results.
If you’re in Poole, you’re checking from Poole. It tells you little about what happens when the search moves to Christchurch, Weymouth or another part of the area you serve.
Our Local Rank Checker lets you change the search location while keeping the keyword, device and result type consistent. You can check Organic or Google Maps results and see which websites or businesses appear from each location.
It’s a point-in-time measurement, but it makes geographic differences much easier to see than repeatedly searching Google from the same browser.
Where We Work Across Dorset
Our Dorset SEO work includes businesses in Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Weymouth and Shaftesbury, along with businesses whose customer base extends into Hampshire.
These locations represent different geographic problems rather than a list of places we’re trying to insert into the page. Some businesses need visibility within a connected urban area. Others need to reach a more dispersed regional market.
If your own customer geography looks different, that’s what we’d work from.
Work Directly With an SEO Consultant
ServiceProSEO combines independent SEO consultancy with the broader capabilities of a digital marketing agency. Dorset projects are led directly by SEO consultant Mick Edwards, who has worked in SEO for more than 14 years following an earlier career in technical software testing and support.
There isn’t an account manager between you and the person examining the website. Mick handles the initial review, recommendations, implementation and monitoring.
That technical background is useful when a ranking problem isn’t what it first appears to be. The wrong URL might be ranking. An important page may be difficult for Google to crawl or index. Maps visibility may be the constraint while the site performs well in organic search.
We establish which problem we’re dealing with, build the SEO strategy around the findings and explain why we’re recommending the work.
